You need a marriage license to get married. In California, you can visit the county clerk’s office with your partner to sign paperwork and ensure neither party is already married. Bring valid photo IDs, such as a driver’s license or passport, and a certified birth certificate. The license is valid immediately and for 90 days statewide.

San Diego County offers several convenient locations for marriage license applications. Head to the main office at 1600 Pacific Highway or visit branches in San Marcos, Chula Vista, or El Cajon. If you’re in Orange County, drop by the office in Santa Ana.

Things to Remember for Your Marriage License Appointment

Bring all necessary documents to your appointment: valid IDs, birth certificates if required, and money for the license fee. Both parties must be present. 

The Name Equality Act of 2007 allows you to choose and list new names on your marriage license. Decide beforehand if you want to change your last name.

Plan to have your ceremony within 90 days of getting your license. After the marriage takes place, submit the signed license to the County Clerk’s office for recording. Request certified copies of your marriage certificate. They cost about $15 each.
